Sunday night LA-based Orgone rounded out two days of funkiness at the Volcanic Funk Fest. From what we could tell, the music was good but at $30-35/day the price may have proved too steep for many. Sunday afternoon the outside stage had less fans than a typical high-school concert.
Speaking of outside, somewhere around 7pm last night, mosquitoes descended on parts of Bend, causing mothers to rush their children to safety lest the pests carry the youngsters away. I was getting food from the Codfather, one of two new fish-and-chips carts, and had to retreat to the indoors to avoid the predators. Is DEET really that bad?
Anyway, Orgone (despite the name, Orgone has nothing to do with Oregon) played a fun, high-energy set Sunday night. Fanny Franklin, who was a total babe, ripped righteous vocals after Orgone played a couple instrumentals to get the crowd (as it was) warmed up. Good times were had by the few folks there.
On that tip, across town Carrie Nation and the Speakeasy was playing a free show at the Horned Hand (in the old Repeat Performance spot near Strictly Organic). These guys kicked ass (see video for confirmation). They put as much energy, sweat and effort into each song as the Larry and His Flask boys. Fast-paced, punky slamgrass with horns and growling vocals makes a brother/sister want to dance. And with $2 Old Germans available, dancing was made easy.
