Nostrafilmus 2-10-2012

Welcome to the inaugural column of Nostrafilmus, where I predict what new movies are going to be worth your time and money in the theater this weekend. I don’t have any psychic abilities per se, but I am a film critic for The Source Weekly and Chud.com and watch about 25 movies a month, so I’m pretty good at flinging my opinion around without invitation.

Opening 2-10-2012 are:

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island - All I’m saying is that if they couldn’t get Brendan Fraser to come back for the sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth (this is the man who made Dudley Do-Right, George of the Jungle and something called Furry Vengeance!), then maybe this one might not be so hot. I unashamedly love The Rock, but mostly just when he’s fighting people and shooting things, not when he’s babysitting sullen teenagers. I’m saying you can probably wait for video (or the end of the Mayan calendar) to catch this one.

Safe House- Denzel Washington in badass mode is enough to get me in a seat, but playing against Ryan Reynolds, Vera Farmiga, Brendan Gleeson and Sam Shepard adds a lot to my “prediction” that this might be a return to the type of Denzel action film we’ve been missing since Man on Fire

Star Wars: Episode 1-The Phantom Menace- This one will make all the money. What people might forget is that since it’s in 3D, Jar-Jar’s mildly racist shucking and jiving will now be right up in your face instead of at a safe distance. But, on the plus side, maybe Ewan McGregor won’t look so sleepy. Wait, yeah, he will.

The Vow- Hey fellas, you got a special lady friend in your life? Yeah? Then guess what you’re seeing! Channing Tatum + Rachel McAdams = your Valentine’s Day!

Today is the last day to catch A Dangerous Method, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and We Bought A Zoo in theaters here, so if you need your fix of Viggo Mortensen playing Sigmund Freud, Gary Oldman going for an Oscar or Scarlett Johansson pretending to be plain looking, then your time is running out.

Until next Wednesday, watch good things.
