This year's Pulitzer Prize winners were announced earlier this week and I was glad to see New York Times writer John Branch listed for his feature piece, "Snow Fall, The avalanche at Tunnel Creek." It's a moving, in depth analysis of the "sidecountry" avalanche that killed three of the 16 experienced freeskiers who were spending a day on the slopes near Stevens Pass, a small Washington ski resort. Branch's award-winning piece includes interviews with survivors, avalanche experts, notable locals and more. Read it here. It's amazing.

The NYT went all out with the interactive bits peppered throughout the online feature. As readers scroll down through the narrative they're treated to dynamic images of the mountain—including moving lines depicting each skier's path—weather patterns, slideshows and short interviews with those involved. It's an impressive display.

It should be noted, however, that last year's winning feature was a brilliant, but decidedly low-tech piece that came from fellow NW alt weekly, The Stranger. Eli Sanders won for his gripping account of woman who survived a violent attack inside her home. You can read it here.
