A Picnic Basket Full of Recipes

Eating our way through summertime

Chelsea Fine

Summer is a such a paradox: Oh sure, on one side, it is time to slim down from winter layers, and sport our favorite jean cut-off shorty-shorts, not to mention trim down for our Speedos and bikinis.

But on the other hand, counterweighing that looking-good, feeling-good urge is the opportunity to pig out! Barbecue! Ice cream! Pies! More pies! Yes, summertime—and especially the Fourth of July weekend—is a smorgasbord of food and drink.

But don't worry: Summertime is not a time to worry. About anything.

That's why we're here to help.

We provide a few places to grill publicly—and a few suggestions how to stay legal about it. As well, we turn to a local barbecue master for a few tips about the art and science of grilling.

And, because no picnic or summertime feast is complete without heaping side dishes of baked beans, cole slaw and potato salad, we are here to help with those as well. And happy to do so. Oh right, and we have two local bartenders pouring out their most potent advice about summer drinks.

What's that you say, what about dessert? Don't worry. We (gently) pried long-held family secret recipes away from favorite local bakers—and hand them off to you here!

See what we mean? Summer is great. But it is hardly about moderation.

Happy Eating! Read all of the red, white and BBQ recipes here.
