I live in proximity to all three magnet schools and my kids could, essentially, have their pick due to the proximity of our home. But... I challenge everyone to walk a few blocks around these schools. It isn't quite the affluence some claim. Of course there is the occasional mini mansion among all the former mill worker houses but the majority of homes/families in proximity to these schools are pretty average.

Sounds like more parents should be pushing BLSD to open more magnets in wings of the large schools on the east side to keep up with demand...?

I have to agree with the previous poster. My family lives four blocks from Highland, this year my daughter was accepted to kindergarten there. We are not affluent, we rent an apartment off of Portland Avenue. We truly enjoy walking to and from school every day. I am not a proponent of the system that admitted my child and do believe more magnet schools might be the answer. I do not believe that affluence is the root of the issue, though.
