Our Picks 10/29-11/6

thursday 30

Vision 15 Economic Forecast

PRESENTATION—How will global events impact the local economy in Bend? Tim Duy, professor of practice at University of Oregon, and Mark Kralj, principal at Ferguson Wellman Capital Management, will present an economic forecast at a Bend Chamber-sponsored breakfast. Leave with a full belly and plenty of fodder for water cooler conversation. 7-10 am. Riverhouse Hotel and Convention Center, 3075 N. Business 97. $49-$55.

thursday 30

"Bend Beer: A History of Brewing in Central Oregon"

BEER & BOOKS—Jon Abernathy can probably best answer what beer pairs well with his new book, "Bend Beer: A History of Brewing in Central Oregon." Over the next week, local beer historian (yes, you didn't know that was a job?) hosts a series of book release events. 6 pm. Platypus Pub, 1203 NE 3rd Ave. Free.

thursday 30

Bend 2030 Livability Series

FORUM—The affordable housing situation in Bend has been described as a "crisis," and Bend 2030 is taking an interactive, community-based approach to addressing the problem. The group will explore the results of a recent survey, engage in exercise and hear about people's personal housing struggles. The outcomes will be presented to decision-makers and stakeholders. 6-8:30pm. Bend Senior Center, 1600 SE Reed Market Rd. Free.

thursday 30

Loudon Wainwright III

FOLK—Reading Loudon Wainwright's resume will make you feel like a failure. He's a Grammy award winner, Dylan-esque songwriter, humorist, film score composer (Judd Apatow's Knocked Up), father of musicians Rufus Wainwright and Martha Wainwright, has had songs covered by Johnny Cash, Bonnie Raitt, and Earl Scruggs, and has parented 26 albums in total. Hear this hyper-productive and legendary singer-songwriter do what he does best. 7 pm. The Belfry, 302 E Main St. Sisters. $30.

thursday 30

Oregon Amazing Wild Rivers

RIVERS—You can't step into the same river twice, and the same can be said about rivers in general: No one river is like any other. Oregon is criss-crossed by some 120 rivers, which have shaped its history and provide countless boating, fishing and swimming opportunities. Tim Palmer presents a slide show from his latest book, "Field Guide to Oregon Rivers." 7 pm. Environmental Center, 16 NW Kansas Ave. Free.

friday 31

Blackflowers Blacksun

ROCK—One of Bend's finest blues bands that disappears every summer and resurfaces every fall for a handful of cold weather shows (one of the members fights fires in Alaska), Blackflowers Blacksun, returns with its brazen Delta-style roots music. Joined by Harley Bourbon, the return of the rock band is a happy addition to the Bend music scene. M&J Tavern, 102 NW Greenwood Ave. Free.

saturday 1

McDougall

ONE MAN BAND—The boot-stomping, drumming, and chugging guitar from bearded wonder Scott McDougall are reminiscent of old-timey, dusty road, folk-country. With lyrical storytelling, songwriting and self-made punky percussion, there's no better way to listen to McDougall than swinging a bottle of whiskey to and fro and shouting along. 9 pm. Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Dr. $5.

tuesday 4

Nitty Gritty Dirty Band

ORIGINALS—If there were a Big Bang for alt-country, first off, it would sound like clattering of steel-string guitars and washboards, and, second, would be embodied by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Playing a version of California country western, its sound is laidback cool, yet decidedly twangy and honkytonk. Mr. Bojangles, indeed! 7 pm. Tower Theater, 835 NW Wall. $54.50- 65.50.

tuesday 4

Election Parties

VOTE—With seemingly every bar in town endorsing him—or, at least displaying Boddie campaign signs—it logically follows that the Nathan Boddie election night party will be the most rollicking. After voting, head on over to celebrate his victory or drown your sorrows post-defeat. 8 pm. Velvet, 805 NW Wall.

tuesday 4

Method Man and Redman

HIP-HOP—This day may go down in history as the end of pot prohibition in Oregon. What better way to celebrate than with the stars of the 2011 stoner cult classic How High? Method Man and Redman have recorded with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Missy Elliott, and Snoop Dogg and hope fans will bring them some of that bomb-ass Oregon weed (see page 17). 8 pm. Midtown Ballroom, 51 NW Greenwood. $32.50-$75.
