Our Picks 5/22 - 5/30

Wilderness plays the BTBS on 5/25.

thursday 23

Ellison Army & Ale Apothecary

BAND & BREW—Paul Arney, owner of The Ale Apothecary, makes the best damn beer in Bend, and on Thursday (in the name of Central Oregon Beer Week) he'll come down from the hills to explain how he does it, while pouring samples and selling bottles to discerning beer drinkers. To sweeten the deal, outlaw country punk band Ellison Army will play the patio. 7 pm. Crow's Feet Commons, 875 NW Brooks St. Free.

thursday 23

All You All

MUSIC—Support local music at one of Bend's best local music establishments. The one that will soon be closed, sadly. Yes, The Horned Hand is closing its doors this summer, but that doesn't mean there aren't good times to be had. There are! Thursday check out local garage rockers All You All, appearing with Isles and Don Quixote. 21+. 8 pm, The Horned Hand, 507 NW Colorado Ave. $5.

friday 24

Growler Phil's Grand Opening

BEER—The new fill station that shares space with Primal Cuts might as well be a bike-thru beer garden for westsiders. This weekend Growler Phil's, with 34 taps (including two ciders and two kombucha taps), introduces itself to the neighborhood: A mini brew fest Friday; BBQ, live music Saturday; and Cornhole Tournament Sunday. Starts 4 pm Friday. Growler Phil's, 1244 NW Galveston Ave. 64 oz. Fills $9-15.

saturday 25

Petersen Rock Garden Reopening

ROCKS—Petersen Rock Garden, a popular 1950s-style roadside tourist attraction, is way more interesting than the world's largest popcorn ball (take that, Sac City, Iowa!). The handcrafted bridges and rock castles made from agate, jasper, thundereggs, petrified wood, lava and obsidian have long outlasted their builder, Danish immigrant Ramus Petersen, who opened the museum in 1935. 10 am. Petersen Rock Garden and Museum, 7930 SW 77th St. Redmond. $3.

saturday 25

Wilderness and Delicious Beer

BAND & BREWS—Wilderness, that lovable four-person indie rock band with a penchant for vintage instruments and unicorns, is playing a FREE SHOW and two of Oregon's best breweries will be there offering up tastes of their top brews. Crux Fermentation Project and Hood River-based Logsdon Farmhouse Ales are the featured breweries at this Central Oregon Beer Week event. Beers from 5-7 pm, band from 7- 9pm. Broken Top Bottle Shop & Ale Café, 1740 NW Pence Ln.

saturday 25

Cake

MUSIC—Cake has such a distinct signature sound: tinny guitars, the upfront sound of the bass drum, muffled trumpets and singer John McCrea's deadpan voice. Oh, that voice. Dripping with sarcasm and glee. Tonight's show kicks off the Bend Summer Concerts. 6:30 pm, Les Schwab Amphitheater, 344 SW Shevlin Hixon Dr. $37+

saturday 25

Tom VandenAvond

MUSIC—The Green Bay, Wis., singer-songwriter is basically a young John Prine. Which is great by us. VandenAvond sings similar such poems, weaving insightful tales of America, whiskey and love from the perspective a learned man. And he does it with a wink and a nod. McDougall, Portland's boot-stompin' old-time blues and punk maestro, opens the show. 8 pm. $5.

sunday 26

Sigur Rós

MUSIC—Jónsi Birgisson, front man for ambient Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós, doesn't just have a great name, he also plays his guitar with a violin bow, AND he made up his own language (of sorts). Through Vonlenska aka Hopelandic, Birgisson conveys and imitates the melodic and rhythmic elements of lyrics. Translation: Fantastic-sounding gibberish. 6:30 pm. Les Schwab Amphitheater, 344 SW Shevlin Hixon Dr. $44.

monday 27

MEMORIAL DAY—Beer butt chicken is the most succulent barbecue ever. Just shove an open can right up there, and the grill does the rest, sucking up the suds and juices. And, because you are asking, I'll tell you: Yes, the key to potato salad is hard-boiled eggs, ranch dressing and chopped green onions. Start the summer right! All day, your backyard.

tuesday 28

Emma Hill

MUSIC—Nashville has Gillian Welch and Anchorage has Emma Hill, a young folk singer with powerful pipes. Hill's most recent album (her third), The Black and Wretched Blue, hit record stores earlier this year and has gained plenty of attention down in the Lower 48. See her before she moves to Nashville with the rest of the greats. 8 pm. The Horned Hand, 507 NW Colorado Ave. Free.
