2014 Takes Hold

Two months into the new year and it’s time to take inventory of the notable music being released this winter.

The key to this Friday Mixtape isn’t necessarily to focus on the individual songs themselves, but rather it’s found by using Spotify to dig into the albums they’re attached to. That activity should yield meaningful results by shining a light on the stellar fourth album by experimental pop songstress St. Vincent, or the third major-label release from Brooklyn loop pedal rockers Yellow Ostrich.

Songs from debut albums by Crosses (stylized as three actual crosses) and St. Paul & The Broken Bones are also highlights, broadening the playlist’s scope with morose, glam pop and gospel soul respectively.

Progressive rock by Temples, tender bluegrass by Hurray for the Riff Raff and EDM R&B from Disclosure and Mary J. Blige complete a mixtape that touches every popular genre right now. Even punk.
