Friday Mixtape! Fresh Tunes for the Weekend

Certain years may churn out a few more memorable albums than others; but that’s typically just the result of personal taste. The truth is that any year’s new music holds gems that could be someone’s next favorite record. It just might take some digging.

With great new albums already released by Jack White and First Aid Kit, as well as a couple tracks from Jeff Tweedy offering a sneak peek at his upcoming solo effort, 2014 is off to a good start.

This Friday Mixtape makes sure nothing gets missed.

A rumbling rock track from A Sunny Day in Glasgow’s new album In Love With Useless, the baroque, synth pop song “The Ballad of Mr. Steak” from Kishi Bashi’s sophomore release Lighght and the title track “Like a Stranger” from pop R&B singer Kitten’s long awaited debut, all highlight albums that will no doubt hang around for year-end, best-of lists.

Of course, every year also needs its feel-good records that punctuate specific seasons but don’t necessarily have lasting power and this playlist provides them with the tongue-in-cheek soul synth of Cherub and the anthem EDM of Calvin Harris, both coming from more than adequate summer, party records.
