A new steel sculpture is currently under installation near the Colorado Street Bridge in Bend's Old Mill District. Local artist Andy Wachs, known for his welded metal art creations all around the city, has designed the new piece entitled “Kingfisher.”Not only will this add to the public art collection of Bend, but the new installation will also provide a perch for the kingfisher bird which is native to the region and the Deschutes River. Kingfishers sit along the edges of waterways, searching for small fish, which they hunt by plunging directly down from a perch -  such as the one this new art will provide.

Wachs designed and engineered with Portland designer Dylan Woock to endure the conditions of the river site. It is anchored to a concrete footing, located under the sculpture base, hidden amongst the natural habitat. The form of the sculpture is an abstraction of a tree; the horizontal perch locations provide an optimal perspective for hunting. It is constructed from steel pipe and rebar.

Specific location is near 15 SW Colorado Avenue, Bend, Oregon.
