OSU-Cascades’ MFA and the Deschutes County Library Pop-up Science Fair

Bend, OR—Deschutes Public Library will host the OSU-Cascades’s Low-Residency MFA in Creative Writing for a Pop-up Science Fair, during the Second Sunday reading series on June 12, 2-4 pm. We invite you to join the library’s Special Guests, the second-year MFA students, for an investigation into the writing life. The Pop-Up Science Fair is a chance to meet, mingle, get messy, and make some art. It is where the scientific method meets poetry, writers wear lab coats, and you get to deepen your understanding of the creative process and to view art growing in the Petri dish right before your eyes.

Equal parts imagination, amateur science, and DIY art making, the Pop-up Science Fair will feature readings and performances throughout the library. If you want to learn more about our innovative, holistic approach to growing writers, this is a chance to gain hands-on experience with those most familiar with it, the students themselves. You are encouraged to walk around the library to various stations, to participate in experimental and experiential art, and, of course, to eat wholesome snacks, like ants-on-a-log.

This collaboration is part of the ongoing collaboration between OSU-Cascades’ MFA and the Deschutes County Library; participating artists are the second-year MFA students and include Ally Bebbling, Joslyn Kite, Jessica Monday, Brittany von Hoene, Barry Langland, Jay Jackson, Christine Coyne and Joshua Evans.

The OSU-Cascades Low Residency MFA Creative Writing Program grows whole writers, guided by this mandate: a healthy artist is a productive artist and productive artists together work across disciplines and styles to find the most true, most meaningful, and most nourishing ways to make art and support each other’s art-making.

Together, the Deschutes Public Library and OSU-Cascades’ Low-Residency MFA in Creative Writing invite you to explore your own creative potential.
