As was to be expected, the Father Luke's room at McMenamins Old St. Francis School was packed last night with a couple hundred Bendites who Tetrised themselves in to see Head for the Hills, the young Fort Collins, Colo.-based acoustic band.
The first set was solid, but somewhat sedated with a few ballads tossed into the fiery picking HFTH is known to purvey. Then the crowd thickened for the second set, presumably because people were home watching the surprisingly entertaining State of the Union (or that's what we'd like to think), and the band took it up a notch.
A highlight was Head For the Hills' take on the Merle Haggard classic "Mama Tried" (see video below) as well as the acoustic jams the bluegrassers dished out to a suddenly dancing and mostly young crowd. And it's worth noting that a woman in attendance was wearing hamburger earmuffs. Seriously.
