The event maxed out at 40 people, but latecomers packed the small space even further. The owner, David Love, handed out ballots for rating each beer by taste, aroma, etc. There were over 20 Bend and Portland brews and the idea was that at the end of the day, a winning city would be crowned. Each person would receive a three-ounce taster (although I think most were more like six). Move over, Romanian judge, I remember thinking. I was ready to bring Bend beer glory.
I got through the first four beers before I got kind of drunk and forgot that there was a judging element involved. But most everyone else kept with it and at the end of the day, Bend won by one vote. I wish I could go on about the various brews and their qualities, but truthfully, the whole thing is a little fuzzy. OMBW says they’re planning a similar event for March Madness, with brackets determining a winner. But really, at an event like this, isn’t everyone a winner?
