Merkley Raps Novick for Being Funny

Oregon House Speaker Jeff Merkley is doing a bit of push-polling to try to find out what lines of attack would be most effective against his chief rival for the Democratic Senate nomination, Steve Novick, The Associated Press reports.

Questions at the end of the poll ask whether respondents would be more or less inclined toward Novick if they knew he "is a pro-tax advocate, repeatedly supporting higher taxes for the middle classes, running on a proposal to raise Social Security taxes" and "a paid political consultant and lobbyist [who] has made a political career out of developing negative attacks, poll-driven campaigns and advising candidates what to say to get elected."

Novick has called for increasing Social Security taxes, but only for people making more than $100,000 a year.

The EYE's favorite part of the poll, though, is the claim that "Novick is simply not a serious candidate who can win election. He carried joke business cards that have a Communist hammer and sickle symbol on them. He voted for Ralph Nader. His campaign ads feature jokes. That is not the person who can beat Gordon Smith."

Campaign ads that actually are funny - shocking!

One irony here is that Merkley's campaign, as reported previously in The EYE, also attempted to be humorous with a video spoofing his rollover accident on Santiam Pass back in February.
