Angeline's: Urban Hip with Baked Treats

Urban Hip with Baked Treats.

Whenever I step inside the funky brick-walled bakery and café at Angeline's, I feel like I'm in Seattle, not Sisters, but in a good way. The booths are tucked into cozy corners with cushions and art hanging from every angle. And the service is some of the friendliest I've ever experienced.

It's a great place for a quick grab-and-go espresso and baked treat, but the warm atmosphere and good vibe invites one to stick around and sample their comfort foods.

For lunch I ordered Angeline's Famous Bagel Sandwich ($6 veg/$7 turkey) loaded with veggies and a side of blue chips. They are happy to spread on a layer of either hummus or soy mayonnaise; I opted for the hummus. All of their bagels are egg-free and chewy wonderful. The soup of the day was a creamy broccoli "not cheddar" ($3.50 for a half bowl/$5 for a bowl with cornbread). I've enjoyed their Indian Lentil, part of the regular menu, on previous visits. This time I decided to totally veg out and order the vegan mac 'n' cheese ($5.50), which our waitress told us was a new item created just that weekend. The chopped bell pepper on top was a nice touch.

My gluten-free friend, Christen, came to choose among the many baked goodies on display inside a large showcase under the counter and on top. Many of Angeline's baked treats double as both wheat and dairy-free. She ordered the peach coconut muffin ($2.75) and I had the coffee-infused chocolate cupcake with creamy soy-margarine frosting ($3.50). Certain items, like the chocolate cupcake, are standard menu fare, but other creations have to be grabbed while they're available, such as the strawberry rhubarb muffin and coffee cake that I've snatched while passing through is, sadly, no longer featured.

Nearly everything on the menu is vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free (with a few chicken, turkey, and tuna dishes), otherwise there's Pesto Stromboli, Spinach Mushroom Lasagna, Mommy Mac and Cheese, Quinoa salad, soups and Polenta Pizza.
