Bend Police's Latest Crosswalk Sting

If you don't stop at crosswalks, Bend police will get you.

Just half a block from our office, down on the corner of Georgia Avenue and Wall Street, Bend police have been posted up to catch drivers who fail to stop for pedestrians at crosswalks.

It looks like they're about to wrap up the sting, but for several hours today a pair of decoys (one of whom was an officer in street clothes) wait for traffic to come down the street. If the car stopped, they'd cross the street. If it blew through the intersection, or took off before the decoy had both feet on the sidewalk, the cops were in hot pursuit.

In the 10 minutes I spent on the corner, I saw three different vehicles pulled over, including the one in the video below.

"We've had three pedestrians killed this year [in Bend], so it's definitely worth it," said the plain clothes officer, who declined to give his name on account of being out of uniform.

The intersection is also in front of the Amity Creek elementary school, and the officer said that the school had asked them to take a look at the crosswalk.
