BendFilm has released the lineup for the 2014 film festival—its 11th annual and the first under new Executive Director Todd Looby—featuring two world premieres, one U.S. premiere, jury awards and prizes. In addition to increased efforts to connect with the Central Oregon community year-round, BendFilm is also partnering for the first time with the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs to screen two Native American-themed films, Winter in the Blood and Return of the River.
“I am continually in awe at how strongly the Central Oregon community supports BendFilm,” said new Director and recent transplant from Chicago, Todd Looby. “With this kind of support, this festival has the potential to do even more amazing things in Central Oregon and in the national Independent Film Scene. With Indie havens like Portland and Seattle so close, there is a bright future for independent film exhibition and filmmaking in Bend, the Warm Springs Reservation and the surrounding area. Our outstanding 2014 program is a strong sign that we are pushing ahead.”
The 2014 fest will open with Winding Stream, the SXSW breakout film by Portland director beth Harrington. The film follows the Carter Family's influence on country music and efforts by the family to keep the legacy of Johnny Cash alive. The screening with include a performance by Americana singer Jen Smieja. The festival will also include a special event featuring director Tony Kaye (American History X) who will discuss his experiences in Hollywood following the screening of his 2011 film, Detachment.
Below is a sampling of the feature-length films. Check out the BendFilm website for the full listings, descriptions, and times. And keep an eye on the blog for film reviews.
