As much as I try to have my finger on the pulse of the food scene here in Bend, I have to admit I haven't been that aware of vegan offerings. Honestly, it wasn't until I talked to the folks from VegNet (vegnetbend.org) did I realize there was a viable vegan community in Central Oregon. I assumed, ignorantly, that the lack of vegan-only restaurants meant all the vegans were living it up in Portland, Seattle and Eugene.


Obviously, this is untrue and there are quite a few vegans in the high desert. And while there isn't a vegan-only restaurant, there are many spots, including Chow and Cafe Yumm!, that cater to vegans. And the vegan population has been congregating online at vegnetbend.org and organizing events for information and food sharing. If you're anti-meat and dairy, a sometimes vegan or just a bit vegan-curious, you'll want to check out their upcoming events:


Ask-A-Vegan Table

Nov. 3: Nature's, 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. Showcasing vegan holiday foods, samples available.

Annual Thanksgiving Potluck.

Nov. 17: Environmental Center, 6 p.m. Free. Bring a vegan Thanksgiving dish to share for 8 people, the recipe, and a place setting.

Gourmet Vegan Thanksgiving: A plant-based celebration at Common Table.

Nov. 21: 6 p.m. $25. To reserve a seat, call Common Table at 541-639-5546.
