Ethan Maffey (“Listen Outside the Box,” August 23) overlooked an independent radio jewel: classical station KWAX-FM (Redmond 88.5, Bend 98.9, Sunriver 90.9, and heard worldwide at kwax.com). In an unpretentious, no-fuss format, KWAX DJs like Catriona Bolster and Rocky Lamanna serve up the riches of classical music 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The University of Oregon holds KWAX’s license, but music-loving listeners and Oregon business underwriters completely fund the station.
Favorite programs: Where do I start? Evening broadcasts of the Cleveland and San Francisco Orchestras and the New York Philharmonic. Saturday matinees from the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and L.A. Opera. Catriona’s great interviews at 11:55 am weekdays with community artists and musicians, including Central Oregon luminaries like Michael Gesme and Isabelle Senger. And Listener’s Choice Friday, where you phone in your favorite pieces to be played back 9-5.
KWAX is not influenced by evil corporations or record labels. And a slug of Schubert makes you feel great.
