Local Food Getting Easier to Find

It's getting easier and easier to find local food and I'm not just talking about CSAs.

Two locally grown food-related organizations are launching parallel campaigns that aim to connect food buyer with local producer.

Central Oregon Intergovernmental Council is launching a new campaign called "Buy Fresh, Buy Local" that should make it easy for people to tell what food at a business is locally produced.

Buy Fresh, Buy Local will also put out a directory. So, if you are looking for goat meat or locally grown basil, you can look it up in the directory and know which grocery stores and restaurants are selling that thing.

You can go to the campaign kick-off next Friday. It starts at 4:30pm at Jackson’s Corner, 845 NW Delaware.

At the same time Central Oregon Locavore, an online farmers marketplace and it’s nonprofit, Local Commerce Alliance, are beginning a $25,000 fundraising campaign that will allow them to move to a new location, which they hope to call a “Local Food Hub.”

In the new location, Locavore founder Nicole Timm and her team will connect farmers with buyers sometimes in a very direct way including having food in the shop for purchase. Locavore has been operating an online marketplace where buyers and growers can connect, but the new location will give them room to grow into something more like a community group focused on local food.

You can donate to the project at centaloregonlocavore.com, through Kickstarter, or by calling founder, Nicolle Timm at (541) 633-0674.
