Jerry and Peggy West, local owners of Winestyles, decided to move to the increasingly bustling Galveston Ave. Situated next to Fleet Feet and Blue, the new Winestyles will feature the same wines for sale in bottles or by the glass, appetizers, wine tastings and gifts, same as the shop on College Way, as well as an expanded Oregon and Washington wine selection. "We worked really hard to cozy up the décor," said Jerry West, who expects much more foot traffic in the new location. The walking-distance location for many westsiders, including this one, is welcomed - especially for their Thursday night wine tastings from 5 to 7 (usually $5, free for members). The Wests will also bring music and art to the new location, starting off with saxophonist/photographer Duncan McNeill, who will play a series of dates in addition to displaying his photography later this month. Winestyles plans to open this Thursday, July 15. Winestyles, 1346 NW Galveston Ave. 541-389-8889.
Hawaiian food lovers no longer have to truck themselves south of Reed Market (not that there's anything wrong with that) for their Kalua Pork fix. Big Island Kona Mix Plate, formerly off S. Highway 97 in a cookie cutter strip mall, snapped up the prime Old Mill storefront formerly occupied by Quiznos. Although the space is smaller, co-owner Shinobu Kuga says the location, next to Regal Cinemas 16, more than makes up for the lack of space. "It's all about location," said Kuga, who owns the restaurant with her aunt and uncle, Sheri and Ricky Kim. "We want to be a part of all the summer events, the concerts and Winterfest," she said.
Big Island Kona Mix Plate will now be open seven days a week and will feature a slightly expanded menu, but will keep the lineup relatively intact, relying on tried-and-true staples like Teriyaki Beef, Mahi-Mahi sandwiches and Spicy Pork, as well as a selection of beers from the big island.
"We're still going to be serving Hawaiian beers by Kona Brewing Co," said Kuga. "Why change something that's working?" Big Island Kona Mix Plate is slated to open at the end of the month.
