Noise Ordinance Opponents Start Petition

Jim Gross, owner of Bend Radio Group, has launched a petition online at the website to draw attention to the city’s noise ordinance, which was revised earlier this summer.

The new noise ordinance, which provides more clarity to the rules about acceptable noise in the city limits, has been criticized by musicians, music venue owners and, now, others in the community who conduct live events, such as Gross.

Bend City Council members said last night and at a meeting two weeks ago that they hear and understand the concerns over the noise ordinance and will consider amending the law at a council meeting on Oct. 17.

The petition launched by Gross is not a formal petition recommending a specific vote be conducted in the city of Bend over the ordinance, said Robyn Christie, city of Bend recorder. For that to have been the case, the petitioners would have submitted language of a ballot measure to the city attorney. The attorney would have responded with a ballot title, and after review by the Deschutes County Circuit Court, the petitioners could begin collecting signatures to put the ballot measure to a vote, she said.

In this case, petitioners are merely showing their support for another look at the noise ordinance.

Gross could not be reached for comment Thursday.
