In the first volume of Lars von Trier’s 2013 Danish drama, self-diagnosed nymphomaniac Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg) recounts her erotic experiences from infancy to age 50 to the man who saved her after a beating, Seligman (Stellan Skarsgård). This dark two-part film is the final entry in von Trier’s “Depression Trilogy,” preceded by Antichrist and Melancholia. Starring Shia LaBeouf, Stacy Martin, Christian Slater and Uma Thurman, the first part of the film recounts Joe’s childhood and adolescence.
