Bend Brewfest Kickoff
BEER—When we say, "There is no way you could taste all of the beers" at BrewFest, please don't take that as a challenge to do so! But yes, it is a matter of balancing quality with quantity as 40-some of the best brewers from the west coast are on hand, and handing out tasters. Noon-11 pm. Through Saturday. Cooper & The Jam
MUSIC—Munch and Music wraps up its summer festival not with a whimper, but with a crescendo of upbeat horns, disco balls, and a mop top of red hair. Cooper & The Jam lets loose an evangelical bellowing that would make Otis Redding proud, and prances on stage in moves that could teach Tina Turner a trick or two. Sunriver Music Festival Classical Concert III
MUSIC—"If music be the food of love, play on." No, this quote wasn't spouted from the eloquent mouth of Axl Rose, nor was it the motto of Beethoven or Mozart. It was Shakespeare, duh! High Desert Poetry Cell
WORDS—Poetry's canon is full to brimming with men—Walt Whitman, Robert Frost, T.S. Eliot, Langston Hughes, some guy named Shakespeare—and yet the lyric art form has a decidedly feminine reputation. The High Desert Poetry Cell is working to change that with its compilation, "The Guys' Home Relationship Maintenance & Improvement Poetry Manual," a book of poetry about, you know, guy stuff. 6:30 pm. FUNK—If GoodLife's patio had a roof, this Seattle-based funk band would tear it off. The group that managed to turn out a funk-phobic music writer for the Stranger brings an old school flavor to the genre that birthed some of music's greats.
