Our Picks 8/13-8/21

thursday 14

Bend Brewfest Kickoff

BEER—When we say, "There is no way you could taste all of the beers" at BrewFest, please don't take that as a challenge to do so! But yes, it is a matter of balancing quality with quantity as 40-some of the best brewers from the west coast are on hand, and handing out tasters. Noon-11 pm. Through Saturday. Les Schwab Amphitheater, 344 SW Shevlin Hixon Dr. $15, includes five tasting tokens.

thursday 14

Cooper & The Jam

MUSIC—Munch and Music wraps up its summer festival not with a whimper, but with a crescendo of upbeat horns, disco balls, and a mop top of red hair. Cooper & The Jam lets loose an evangelical bellowing that would make Otis Redding proud, and prances on stage in moves that could teach Tina Turner a trick or two. A fantastic ending for the series. 5:30 pm. Drake Park, 777 NW Riverside Blvd. Free.

friday 15

Jerry Joseph and the Jackmormons

MUSIC—Looking ever so slightly like a middle-aged Bruce Willis, Jerry Joseph is something like if John McClane were a singer-songwriter as opposed to a super-cop, terrorism fighter; tough, unrelenting chords, biting lyrics, and mesmerizing likability. 9 pm. Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century. $10.

friday 15

Sunriver Music Festival Classical Concert III

MUSIC—"If music be the food of love, play on." No, this quote wasn't spouted from the eloquent mouth of Axl Rose, nor was it the motto of Beethoven or Mozart. It was Shakespeare, duh! A muse for not only literature and theatre, but music, too. The Central Oregon Master Singers present songs inspired by the Bard. 7:30 pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St. $35-$70.

friday 15

Reader Appreciation Party

PARTY—Have you caught yourself humming R. Kelly's "The World's Greatest" lately? We can't blame you. In recognition of your epic greatness, the Source is throwing you a party, filled with the winners of our annual Best of Central Oregon readers' poll. Did we mention you won Best Reader? Hob nob with other winners while Portland pop bands The Breaking and The Cabin Project serenade you. 7 pm. Crow's Feet Commons/Mirror Pond Plaza, 875 NW Brooks St. Free.

saturday 16

Show Us Your Spokes

MUSIC—Local pirate-punk rockers Harley Bourbon are breaking the mold with a new lineup of musicians and a rollicking roughneck folk style that will have you chugging whiskey and dancing in no time. Commute to the show without a motor vehicle and get a beverage ticket at the door! 7 pm. Parrilla Grill, 635 NW14th St. $5.

saturday 16

Dinner on the Range

FOOD—Fifteen of Central Oregon's top chefs cook up their spiffiest small plates for this annual moneymaker for the Ronald McDonald House. Masters from 10 Below, Pine Tavern, Victorian, Hola, Deschutes Brewery, Barney Prines, Blacksmith, Bonta Gelato, Zydeco, Jen's Garden, Level 2 and La Magie come together with Portland's Dance Machine to fill up and shake up this fundraiser. 5 pm. Pronghorn, 65600 Pronghorn Estates Dr. $125.

saturday 16

High Desert Poetry Cell

WORDS—Poetry's canon is full to brimming with men—Walt Whitman, Robert Frost, T.S. Eliot, Langston Hughes, some guy named Shakespeare—and yet the lyric art form has a decidedly feminine reputation. The High Desert Poetry Cell is working to change that with its compilation, "The Guys' Home Relationship Maintenance & Improvement Poetry Manual," a book of poetry about, you know, guy stuff. 6:30 pm. Paulina Springs Books, 252 W. Hood St., Sisters. Free.

tuesday 19

Down North

FUNK—If GoodLife's patio had a roof, this Seattle-based funk band would tear it off. The group that managed to turn out a funk-phobic music writer for the Stranger brings an old school flavor to the genre that birthed some of music's greats. From throbbing, syncopated base lines to funky flourishes and versatile vocals reminiscent of the King of Pop, Down North knows how to lay down the boogie. 7 pm. GoodLife Brewery, 70 SW Century Dr. Free.

wednesday 20

Smarty Party with MoWo

WORDS—This beer's for the children. And the next one, and the next one. Support Start Making A Reader Today (SMART) with $1 from every beer you order at the patio party while the wise words of local poet and rapper MOsley WOtta massage your own grey matter. How often can you say that drinking makes you (and the children) smarter? 6 pm. Worthy Brewing Company, 495 NE Bellevue Dr. Free.
