Garth Stein

friday-saturday 8-9

The last time Garth Stein came to Bend, he was promoting a then little-known book called, "The Art of Racing in the Rain," a tale narrated by a dog named Enzo, that became a huge hit not just with Central Oregon's four-legged-friend lovers, but soon gained readers around the world. Since last visiting Bend, the Seattle-based author has been celebrated at big-time literary events across the country and has seen his novel translated into 23 languages. Stein is in town for the weekend, appearing at Crook County High School in Prineville on Friday (7pm), then on Saturday he's at the Mavkericks in Sunriver (4:30pm) and finishes his Central Oregon tour at Summit High School (7:30pm) where he'll appear at the Assistance League of Bend Speakers Forum ($20).

Ex-Cowboys

friday 8

Holy crap, do Ex-Cowboys make some weirdly awesome music. The Portland trio purveys a bizarre blend of hip-hop, electronica and all-out psychedelica for a sound that's going to serve as an excellent backdrop for a late night dance party. It's like Radiohead for people who really like to dance. 10pm. Madhappy Lounge, 850 NW Brooks St.

HDC's 8th Annual Drag Show

saturday 9

With their annual fundraiser, the Human Dignity Coalition brings one of the wildest shows of the year to downtown Bend with their drag show, featuring (in case you didn't know the meaning of "drag show") some excellent gender-bending costumes and performances. It's a festive event, to say the least, and organizers invite you to get creative with your attire, and there will be prizes for the best headdress and hats. $10-20 donation at the door. All funds raised go toward HDC's Marriage Equality Campaign. 8pm. Boondock's Bar & Grill, 70 NW Newport Ave.

Valient Thorr, Red Fang, Kandi Coded, Cheers Film Premier

saturday 9

Ever wonder what a band from Venus sounds like? Well, check out this show from Valient Thorr and you'll have a pretty good idea. We profiled the band in the Sound section this week, take a look, ya'll. This film also includes a screening of the new snowboarding film, Cheers. $10. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

World Hoop Day

sunday 10

The art of spinning a piece of circular plastic around one's hips (often called "hooping") has become an increasingly popular activity, especially in these parts. Sunday is the worldwide celebration of the sport, and some of Bend's most skilled hoopers invite you to join them at Harmon Park to celebrate. See worldhoopday.org for details. Contact [email protected] or 541-408-6033. 2pm-4pm. Harmon Park, 1300 NW Harmon Blvd.

David Grisman Quintet

sunday 10

The jazz-spiced bluegrass of David Grisman is finally making its way to Bend, and at the Tower Theatre, no less. Read more about the legendary mandolin strummer in the On Stage column this week. $40 & $50. 7pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St.

The Source Fiction Reading
with Benjamin Percy

monday 11

Last week we published the winners of our annual fiction contest and on Monday evening, we'll hear from those writers at The Nature of Words, where Benjamin Percy, the author of the new novel, "The Wilding," will also be appearing to read from and sign the book. 6pm doors, 7pm reading, The Nature of Words, 224 NW Oregon Ave.

Judy Collins

tuesday 12

Wow, the Tower sure has brought in a healthy list of big time musicians with long resumes this year (see the David Grisman write up on this same page) and Judy Collins is the latest in that string of artists. Hopefully you've already got tickets, because this show, featuring one of the most well known folk singers in popular music history, is looking like it's going to sell out. Hop on it! $27, $34, $44/adv. Day of show all seats increase $3. 7:30pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St.
