Our Picks for the Week 7/16-7/23

Taarka
thursday 16

The folk-powered world music machine known as Taarka is back in town once again, this time rocking the upper confines of the Summit Saloon and Stage before crossing the mountains for the Northwest String Summit. Yes, it's that time of year again when all the NWSS bands stop off here in Bend to warm up (or warm down) for one of the West Coast's biggest acoustic music festivals. 8pm. The Summit Saloon & Stage, 125 NW Oregon Ave.

Anderson
friday 17

Read more about this electro, indie-pop band from the Netherlands in the On Stage column. Then you'll almost certainly want to hit up Backporch (which is suddenly a music venue on occasion) for this Postal Service-like duo. 7pm. Backporch Coffee Roasters, 1075 NW Newport Ave.

Red Herring
through saturday 25

This play covers three different love stories, a murder mystery and a nuclear espionage plot converge in this fable about marriage and other explosive devices. It's a short run, even for Bend standards, so get on it. July 17, 18, 24, 25 at 7:30pm, July 19 at 2pm. Greenwood Playhouse, 148 NW Greenwood Ave. 389-0803. $20/adults, $15/seniors, $10/students.

Infamous Stringdusters
friday 17

Again, the week before Northwest String Summit is like Christmas for twangy music fans here in Bend, as evidenced by this show, which features the Infamous Stringdusters, a Nashville-based bluegrass sextet. This is a fundraiser for the Americana Project, the local musical education program that brings Americana music into area schools. 6pm. $5 suggested donation. Black Butte Ranch, 12930 Hawks Beard (West of Sisters on Hwy 20).

The Underground Opening Party
friday 17

There's a new club in town and it's in a location that might be old for some people - the former Club 97 off of Third Street. It's a massive space with room for almost a thousand people and promises to keep national touring acts rolling through its doors. For this opening party, local funksters El Dante are slated to break the place in nicely. Doors at 6pm, music at 8pm. $5. The Underground. 2221 NE 3rd St.

21st Annual Deschutes Brewery Sagebrush Classic
friday-saturday 17-18

This golf and food celebration is one of the biggest food and beer pairing events in the country, bringing in some of the world's most accomplished chefs. Friday night is the golf tournament and the feast begins at 5pm Saturday. All of this is for charity, benefiting the Deschutes Children's Foundation. Go to sagebrush.org/tickets. Friday, Jul 17 and Saturday, Jul 18. Broken Top Club, 61999 Brokentop Dr.

Tour des Chutes - Ride for Cancer
saturday 18

Here's another great charity event, and one that's become quite popular among the cycling community in only a few short years. This multi-distance cycling event benefits the Lance Armstrong Foundation and St. Charles Cancer Survivorship Program. Live music, vendor expo and raffle after the ride. Go to tourdeschutes.org for info. Saturday, Jul 18. High Lakes Elementary School, 2500 NW High Lakes Lp.

Music for Chimps with Anastacia, Electric Sudaki
saturday 18

Do you like Chimps? How could you not? This show, featuring two strong local acts, gives all proceeds to Chimps Inc., a Bend-based chimpanzee sanctuary that provides a home to chimps in need of shelter. Also, 10 percent of the bar sales go to help the animals, so drink up. As for music, there's the soulfully powerful folk pop of Anastacia as well as Electric Sudaki, a bluesy, jazzy explosion of funk rock. 9pm. $5-10 suggested donation. Silver Moon Brewery, 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo
sunday 19

Go to this show. Do whatever you need to get there, but just be there and you'll be thankful that you got to hear one of the greatest vocal groups of all time. The South African ensemble is one of its country's biggest groups and, well, just makes you feel better about yourself. "Our aim from the beginning with our music is about uplifting our spirits and the spirits of the people," longtime member Albert Mazibuko told the Source when the group last came to Bend in March of 2008. If that's the band's mission statement, then they're doing a great job. 7pm. $32/adv, $35/door. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St.

Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band
tuesday 21

Get your boots a stomping for this show. Read all about it on the next page. 9pm. $12. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave. All Ages.

Too Short
thursday 23

Even if you've since moved on from rap music, you absolutely must know this name. Too Short pretty much invented pimpin', pumping out one sex-fueled hit after another in the '90s (during which he more or less authored the use of "bi-atch" in popular music), influencing people like Snoop Dogg and many others. This ain't his first rodeo in these parts either, he played here in 2004 and 2007. Also on the bill are Mistah Fab, Tha Jacka, Kenny Mack, Top Shelf, Mikey Vegaz, Double 00 & Koshir. Hosted By DJ Fatboy. All ages. 8pm. $24/adv, $29/door. Midtown Ballroom, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

Bend Roots Fundraiser
thursday 23

Believe it or not, the Bend Roots Revival is only about two months away. But before the event can take off, there needs to be a cash injection, which is where you come in. Go to this show, pay at the door, dance your face off and wait till September. And check out this bill: Empty Space Orchestra, The Mostest, Leif James - as well as Marcello Bernardes, a visiting musician from Brazil. 8pm. $10. Tulen Center 20 NW Greenwood Ave.
