Our Picks for the Week of 6/25-7/4

1956: The Year Elvis Shook the World

wednesday 25

Mike Ficher, who you got to know in last week's edition of the Source is also the host of KPOV's Ultimate Oldies Show, and is giving a presentation on the early years of Elvis Presley's career. 6:30pm Wednesday, Jun 25. La Pine Public Library, 16425 1st St, La Pine.

E-40

friday 27

Known as "The Ambassador of the Bay," E-40 has conquered the music charts and released 12 albums in 15 years. Showing off San Francisco's "hyphy" stylings, this hip-hop star is set to light up the Midtown Ballroom and make you go dumb. See this week's Sound article for a run-down on the lingo. $30/advance, $35/day of show (service charges not included). 7pm, Midtown Music Hall, 51 NW Greenwood.

Mt. Bachelor Kennel Club Dog Show

friday-sunday 27-29

Do you like dogs? Like a lot? Like more than a friend? If you answered yes to at least two of those questions, then you should hightail it up to Redmond for three full days of dogs. It ain't Westminster, but we aren't too shabby in the canine department out this way. Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center, 3800 SW Airport Way, Redmond.

KPOV Hootenanny

saturday 28

Bend Community Radio, 106.7FM is turning three years old and celebrating with an outdoor contra dance, a cakewalk, food and a Hootenanny at the studios. Sounds like a rip-roaring good time to us. Just a heads up, there's a Hoe-down taking place at the same time up at Northwest Crossing. A Hootenany and a Hoedown? Sounds like the fixings for fisticuffs. 4pm KPOV Studios, 501 NW Bond St.

Redmond Historic Hotels Day & UFO Festival

saturday 28

Dress like an alien, UFO, Trekkie or an early 1900s Central Oregon settler. Hopefully, you've taken the time to remove the protective encasing from your costume and sufficiently ironed it before this weekend's out-of-this-world (get it?) fun. Redmond mixes things up and combines Project Blue Book with a dose of history in this one day festival to end all festivals. With live music, food, scavenger hunts, a costume party and a parade in the works, we're sure this event won't leave you bored. 10am - 4pm, Redmond Downtown Plaza.

Deschutes Brewery 20th Anniversary Bash

saturday 28

Bend's own local brewery turns 20 and invites you to help them celebrate. Yup, it's been 20 years since the now-famous brewery took off, hard to believe. Check out Moon Mountain Ramblers' performances on the loading dock while you take a self-guided tour of the brewery and sample the 20th Anniversary brew. Don't worry, this celebration won't slow down Black Butte Porter production. 12-4pm, Deschutes Brewery, 901 SW Simpson Ave, 385-8606.

Howard Lyman

saturday 28

Lyman is known as "The Mad Cowboy," a former cattle rancher who has since become a vegetarian and a crusader for ethics in the food production industry, a topic he'll discuss at his appearance in Bend. Some might remember him for his appearance on Oprah in the 1990s that resulted in Oprah denouncing hamburgers. 6:30pm Bend Community Center, 1036 NE 5th St. Free.

Young Dubliners

sunday 29

Keith Roberts and his raucous band of Irish transplants and Los Angeles musicians come to Bend for a concert full of songs about love, war, emigration, incarceration and drinking and promote their latest album The Irish Sessions. No, they're nothing like U2 (Young Dubs are faster, louder and, well, more Irish-sounding), but that doesn't mean you shouldn't check them out solely for Roberts' silly stage ramblings. Free. 2:30 pm Les Schwab Amphitheater, 244 Shevlin Hixon Dr.

Brent Alan & His Funky Friends

wednesday 4

As the name implies, Alan and company don't mind brining the funk and laying it on thick at that. This local troupe continues to hit the pavement hard this spring/summer and this free McMenies show should be a good chance for those who're late boarding the BAAHFF train. That acronym isn't all that visually appealing, on second inspection. 7pm. Free. McMenamins Old St. Francis School. 700 NW Bond St. 382-5174
