Out of Town 1/15 —1/23

friday 17

Damien Jurado

Damien Jurado's music is comparable to the Seattle weather that serves as the backdrop to the artist's native stomping grounds—depressed and overcast. Simple guitar melodies and harmonic vocals linger like a cloudy ceiling of the city. His quotable lyrics provide a beautiful soundtrack to help limp through the rainy winter. 9 pm. Neptune Theatre. $15.

tuesday 21

Colin Meloy

Of Decemberists fame, froggy-voiced, tweed-loving, glasses-wearing big-word-using Meloy promises a set comprised of covers from his most recent EP, old Decemberists' material and unreleased solo material. Meloy's Portland and Seattle set will also feature a special guest, ubiquitous musician and indie contributor John Roderick who has worked with the Decemberists as well as Death Cab for Cutie, Nada Surf and Pedro the Lion. 8 pm. Crystal Ballroom. $30.

friday 17-saturday 18

Big Woody

Inspired by Bend's own Little Woody festival, Portland's cousin beer tasting features craft wood-aged beers from the best breweries in the West and a whiskey tasting. We're sold! Barrel-aged beers come in a variety of vessels from pinot noir barrels to more traditional bourbon barrels, and even open fermentation sours, IPAs and ales. 4 pm. Leftbank Annex. $40.

thursday 23

Volcano Choir

Bon Iver's singer and songwriting force, Justin Vernon, has a flexible falsetto that he throws like a boomerang in all of his musical endeavors. When he performs with side project Volcano Choir, he also has an auto-tuner and a twinkling affinity for math rock. Collaborating with former members of Collections of Colonies of Bees, Death Blues and All Tiny Creatures, Volcano Choir is an electro-pop twist on Vernon's outstanding musical creations.7:30 pm. Wonder Ballroom. $20-$23.
