Self-deprecation is the hallmark of good stand-up and "professional idiot" Steve-O takes it to the next cringe-worthy level. The masochistic stuntman of Jackass fame may have given up booze and beef, but he's still beating himself up in other ways. Past on-stage stunts have included setting his head on fire and regurgitating a pot-filled condom. Slapstick aside, Steve-O's stories about the antics of his fellow jackasses will bring tears to your eyes and pain to your sides. 7:30 and 10 pm. Helium Comedy Club. $25-$30.
The Tell-Tale Heart
Proving that Edgar Allen Poe is not merely a seasonal indulgence, Tears of Joy Theatre presents the creepy classic, "The Tell-Tale Heart," with a twist that'll have you shivering. Blending live action, masks, and the full-size puppets they are known for, the theatre company delves into the tale of paranoia, madness, and murder under the Old Man's glowing "vulture eye." The play is recommended for ages 10 and up, but if you take your kid, don't be surprised if they have you listening for still beating hearts under their bed at night. 2 pm. Hollywood Theatre. $15. monday 3 Dr. Dog If slow and steady wins the race, Dr. Dog is an indie band to watch. The Philly-based group has released seven albums and four EPs since it first hit the scene with its crowd-pleasing, genre-defying blend of folk, rock, pop, and soul in 2002. The six-man band's most recent album B-Room—the first recorded in Dr. Dog's hand-built mill-turned-studio—reflects its environment with a return to a raw, stripped-down rock sound. 8 pm. Crystal Ballroom. $23-$25. wednesday 5 Angel Olsen Maybe it's the recent fog, but there's something about the haunting vocals of folk singer-songwriter Angel Olsen that seems perfect for these ethereal pre-spring days. The Chicago-based artist who got her start touring with Bonnie "Prince" Billy and The Cairo Gang released her first full band album "Burn Your Fire for No Witness" Feb. 17 under Jagjaguwar. Pickathon presents this mid-week treasure at the intimate Mississippi Studios with masterful young Irish guitarist Cian Nugent warming the stage with his deliberate style. 8 pm. Mississippi Studios. $10-$12.
