$74 million, plus?! Is there a misplaced decimal in that figure?

I can find merit in all three of the main paths this issue could take, so I guess that makes me in the fourth group, by default. I lean toward a natural river, but that idea never seemed practical, especially now that PPL intends on keeping the dam and the public will not be guaranteed access to the new shore due to the pond floor being privately owned. My main wish is that whatever is done, the public should not have to foot the entire bill. Obviously, MPS feels that alternative funding is one part of the picture, but the money raised so far is a drop in the bucket. I was under the impression that the silting problem was caused mainly by a poorly maintained dam. In that case, given that the repair may be financially unfeasible, Pacific Power should at least be helping to cover the cost of alternatives, perhaps even matching any public or donated funds. Ideally, if the dam has to stay in place, Id like to see fish passage and working sluice gates. In that case, using public dollars to help fix PacifiCorps problem would probably be a worthy cause. If all we do is continue to defer maintenance, and dredge once in a generation, well, Mr. Buffet can probably afford to help pay for that, too.

Well...Kayos Dinnerhouse does technically sit to the West of 3rd St. :) I don't think it helps that it's flanked by an all-asphalt (no landscaping) drive-up style parking lot and an Econo Lodge. That says nothing of the quality of the food, but I'd wager it has a little to do with the lack of consideration as "fine dining." Atmosphere and ambiance go a long way.

Taylor's was awesome and cheap, but still didn't make it in that same general area. The Hideaway is just a few blocks away, but being tucked back a bit in the trees off 3rd street helps a lot with making it feel less like a laundromat.

The east side is also home to the original Pilot Butte, and while not necessarily gourmet, it's good enough to have spawn a west side location (which, in my humble opinion, offers a more relaxed and enjoyable meal experience).

I also am happy to have a Baldy's on this side, and the Phoenix passes muster as a decent place for a meal and a drink, but Worthy is the absolute best thing to happen to east side food since I've been in the area.

I've dined (and imbibed) at Worthy on several occasions now, and I can tell you it's been superb every time. I can't say the same thing for any other brewpub in town, save 10 Barrel.

There seems to be a lot emotion here (as noted by Dean), and not a whole lot of fact. I don't claim to know much about the situation, but if what I hear on the news is accurate, then the kid didn't go out with "little to eat." KTVZ reported that he went out with "just 2 cups of granola," which is actually quite a lot of food (near 1000 calories). Additionally, while a 40lb pack is fairly heavy, a healthy 16 year old should be able to handle that fine. My guess is that something else was amiss here. It's only a feeling, not a fact, but the paragraphs in question aren't exactly fact-filled. I suppose that's part of the appeal of a section called "WTF." It's only a rant. Hopefully my comments don't seem disrespectful to the deceased. It's just that a lot people are treating the SageWalk folks and the parents as guilty until proven innocent.
