Protecting Mature and Old Growth Forests for Climate and Biodiversity

When: Tue., March 2, 5:30-6:30 p.m. 2021

This panel will discuss the science and policy implications of securing permanent protections for mature and old growth on the Tongass National Forest and in the carbon-rich forests of Pacific Northwest via an administrative strategy, and highlight the need for broader efforts nationwide. Protecting these forests represents one of the most important near-term climate solutions available. Establishing permanent protections will ensure biodiversity protection in addition to sequestering and storing more carbon — a strategy aligned with the incoming Biden administration’s goal to protect 30 percent of U.S. lands and waters from development by 2030.
