Every day, the Source publishes a mix of locally reported stories on our website, keeping you up to date on developments in news, food, music and the arts. We’re committed to covering this city where we live, this city that we love, and we hear regularly from readers who appreciate our ability to put breaking news in context.

The Source has been a free publication for its 22 years. It has been free as a print version and continued that way when we began to publish online, on social media and through our newsletters.

But, as most of our readers know, times are different for local journalism. Tech giants are hoovering up small businesses and small-business advertising—which has been the staple for locally owned media. Without these resources, journalism struggles to bring coverage of community news, arts and entertainment that social media cannot deliver.

Sometimes, genius happens where you least expect it. Yesterday, it was on foodnetwork.com, where Rachel Ray posted her recipe for Microwave Bacon. Yes, bacon in a microwave. The actual recipe:

Ingredients: 8 slices bacon

Directions: Place 2 sheets of paper towel on a microwave safe plate, lay the bacon out on the paper towel not over lapping the slices. Place 2 more sheets of paper towel on top. Place in the microwave on high for 6 to 13 minutes.

But this is not the best part. Because Food Network allows for comments on their recipes. And oh, did the commenters come through. Some of the highlights:

Do i have to push any buttons on the microwave?

This recipe looks great! Could you please add the instructions on how to switch the oven on and off.

Tried this recipe last night. The bacon was great, but the paper towels tasted awful.

Ok, I followed the instructions, but now my bacon is trapped within the microwave. Am I supposed to remove it? If so, how? Please help.

Does anyone have a good recipe for Banana? I typically take one from the bunch, peel it, discard the peed and eat it. But I feel like I am missing something. Any recipe for Orange would be helpful too.

and my favorite:

I got high for 6 to 13 minutes. Now what do I do? WHAT DO I DO??
