Sing Your Heart Out

Songs to make you king or queen of the karaoke By Source staff

Gregory Perez

Don't Stop Believing that karaoke is a good idea. No matter the song, no matter how many beers deep. We Wannabe stars, and We Will Survive the boos, the drunken heckles. In fact, the Source's Christmas party turned into a karaoke-centric shindig, late night at Corey's. Here are some gems suggested by our editors, writers, staff and office groupies for when the Girls (or boys) Just Want to Have Fun.

"Play that Funky Music" by Wild Cherry. This one is obvious, right?

"You're So Vain" by Carly Simon. Everyone joins in on this one because everyone has someone they wish to sing this song to!

"Faster Horses" by Tom T Hall. "Faster Horses, Younger Women, Older Whisky, More Money" What more need be said...?

"Time to Pretend" by MGMT. A must: one karaoke song written in the current decade.

"On the Road Again" by Willie Nelson. Everyone knows the words (or should), good solo or as a duet, goes great with cheap beer. It meets all the karaoke requirements.

"Whenever I See Your Smiling Face" by James Taylor. Must be done as a same-sex duet, staring deeply into each other's eyes while performing.

"Ignition Remix" by R Kelly. Perfect end-of-the-night jam for getting folks out of the after-party and into the hotel lobby, then taking it to their rooms.

"I Want to Dance with Somebody" by Whitney Huston. Because karaoke is never as fun without an accompanying '80s-style dance party.

"Juke Box Hero" by Foreigner. Because the thumping bass line gives is a reason to rock your hips in front of a crowd. And, because you have stars in your eyes.

"Black Velvet" by Alannah Myles. If you've got the pipes and the charisma, "Black Velvet," an ode to Elvis and sweet Southern boys, will bring down the house.

"Chain" by Fleetwood Mac. A great ass-shaker with an epic build to the scathing chorus, "If you don't love me now, then you will never love me again" — the ultimate for breakup karaoke and the perfect opportunity to slip in a rockin' air-guitar solo.
