Every Wednesday, one of my routines is to head downtown to the farmers’ market. For many of us sharing a strong love of farm fresh food, it is an exciting day. For others, the whole scene can be a little daunting. With so many booths and so much offered, it can be a little overwhelming, and leave some not knowing what to try.
To address this, let me first mention that all the farmers are bringing their best, and it is therefore difficult to go wrong, no matter where one chooses to shop. Even with all the wonderful options, it is still interesting to point out those worthy of extra mention.
I decided to see what was creating a stir and asked around. After talking with a few folks, one booth was mentioned repeatedly, Candy’s Farm.
Coming out of Salem, Candy’s Farm offers produce with a decidedly Asian flare. They offer a couple types of bok choy, Chinese broccoli, lemon grass, ginger, fresh tofu and more. The excitement, however, was really fueled by their seasoning packets.
Candy’s creates seasoning packets containing roasted garlic, ginger, lemon grass, and sesame from their farm, and I heard that it was not to be missed. So, I gave it a try.
I bought bok choy and Chinese broccoli to go with one of these little packets, and took it home. At five dollars for one seasoning packet, I did make a bit of an investment; but trusted what I was told because it looked amazing, and I could smell it through the bag.
I chopped the vegetables, added carrots and a couple tablespoons of the seasoning to the sauté and finished with a little sesame oil. With deep garlic, ginger and sesame flavors, I was hooked. This was one of the easiest dinners I 'd cooked in some time, and my family loved it.
