The Beer Issue

The evolution of beer, from cave to craft

Dave Berry, that eternal fountain of wit, once quipped, "Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza."

We agree!

For our first Beer Issue, we have pulled apart beer by its four main ingredients—water, hops, malt and yeast—and then lent a particular eye (taste bud?) toward how each of these fundamentals are evolving, and how the industry is changing. Roger Worthington gives us an education about harvesting hops (pg. 12), and Larry Sidor from Crux Fermentation Project explains how they factor malts into their bold tastes (pg. 14), and GoodLife predicts that cans are the vessel of choice for the fully evolved beer drinker (pg. 19).
