The Traveling Camera: Warm Springs pow wow

Come photograph the upcoming Warm Springs Pow Wow with Christian Heeb.

As a travel photographer, my career was established among other things by photographing Native American culture. Once we moved to Oregon, it was obvious for me to go shoot the Pow Wow in Warm Springs in June. This being an outdoor event, you can't predict what the weather will be like. Usually, I like shooting the dances at sunset when the warm glow of the setting sun lights up the colorful costumes of the dancers.

That did not happen in Warm Springs that year. There were clouds that blocked out the sun early on. So I used my external Flash Speed light unit with a TTL extension cord to light up the passing dancers. I shot this on Fuji Velvia film while setting the exposure and aperture manually then let the flash fill in automatically. Needles to say, the effect was dramatic. This is still one of my best selling Indian photos today. The Pow Wow in Warm Springs happens every year, and I will be there again.

You can head up with me at the workshop I'll be holding. Here are the details.
