The Wind Rises

Hayao Miyazaki's newest, and last, film

From acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki (the man behind the vivid anime films Princess Mononoke, Ponyo, and Spirited Away) comes another dreamlike animation. A satisfying and soaring adventure for children's imaginative minds and adults' sense of whimsy alike. Miyazaki is known for his unique illustration; using simple, pen and paper techniques, the result is entrancing. The director has been described as a fan of scenery porn (as well as the best living animation director alive), often using lush landscapes and environmental themes as his points of focus. The only anime director to ever win an Academy Award, Miyazaki has "retired" three times in the last decade, but continues to emerge from retirement with blissful colorscapes and sweet, heartbreaking and sometimes strange stories.

Obsessed with flying from childhood, (Miyazaki's father and uncle owned a large airplane manufacturing company), airplanes were allegedly the first thing that Miyazaki learned to draw. The Wind Rises follows his first passion, telling the story of Jiro Horikoshi, an aviation engineer, as he plays a role in the development of the A-6M, a World War II fighter plane.

The Wind Rises is not only (probably) the last film by perhaps the greatest animation director alive, but features some of the biggest names in Hollywood providing voices for the American version of the film including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jennifer Grey and Elijah Wood.
